Merriam-Webster
B-roll Matters is a media camp that wants to expose the underserved youth in the community to the world of media. You may ask what B-Roll is. ˈbē-ˌrōl: recorded video of subjects or locations used to provide essential video for the story.
The program's mission is to provide a safe learning environment for students while offering hands-on education and job training in Mass Communications through broadcast, social media, photography, print journalism, and news literacy. Students will learn why b-roll is critical to powerful storytelling for capturing—compelling visuals for any video story. The camp will also highlight editing, lighting, and the art of storytelling. The camp will be focused on youth 8 to 18 years old.
Being in the media field, specifically broadcasting, for over 20 years, I've seen the lack of black and brown representation in the newsrooms. Less than 10% of the newsroom is of color. There are opportunities for the black and brown people in the community to sit at the table and tell the stories that affect them and their families. This will help diversify the stories that are being told in their community. Providing these tools to the youth will allow them to be videographers, social media influencers, reporters, editors, YouTubers, or storytellers.
Youth voices are a critical part of our community dialogue. B-Roll Matters strives to help youth to be creators and consumers of media. We hope to gain creative confidence through the camps and strengthen their voice.
